This is the most comprehensive adventure to experience Machu Picchu in a short time; you will hike on one of the nicest parts of the Inca trail entering Machu Picchu by way of “Intipunku” or “The Gate to the Sun” the same way the ancient Incas did. This is the best alternative for people who do not have the time to do the classic longer route.
All our trips begin with a Sacred Valley active tour, an ideal way to acclimatize and get familiar with Inca trails. We overnight at a hotel in Ollantaytambo to next morning catch the earlier train and reach the trail in time to enjoy a full day of adventure.
Note: This hike needs Inca trail permits. We recommend to reserve in advance.
At 7:30 a.m. in the morning, we will pick you up by private vehicle from your hotel for an in-depth Sacred Valley visit. You will experience short hikes, following the natural way to get close to the Inca Trail, while acclimatizing and getting familiarized with Inca trails. As we leave the city, we will drive over the “Ccorao” pass above Cusco to descend on a winding road to the Sacred Valley of the Incas. Here a short hike on an Inca trail will take us to the magnificent Inca citadel of PISAC, considered one of the outstanding Inca remains due to the quality of the stonework and the breath-taking location on a mountain saddle overlooking the Sacred Valley. After a 1 1/2hour hike and visit, we will drive down the mountain for a short visit to the colonial town and enjoy a quick stop at their famous Indian handicraft market. Afterwards, we will drive following the Urubamba River downstream to the City of Urubamba. Here we will visit the local food market where you will be impressed by the variety of fresh vegetables and fruits, that are the basis of Peruvian cuisine. We will enjoy lunch at a local restaurant, to later take a short ride to Ollantaytambo, considered the most authentic living Inca town. This town has been continuously inhabited since Inca times until the present, conserving its original urban layout and stone walled homes. A guided walking tour through the extensive ruins and cobblestone paved narrow streets, will make you feel like you are travelling back in time. Stay at Hotel in Ollantaytambo for the night. L, Dinner on your own.
We pick you up from your hotel to transfer to the local Train Station to catch an early train and travel to Km. 104. Here we leave the train to cross the Urubamba River by a hanging bridge built on rock-solid Inca foundations. Once at the other side, we register at the checkpoint and then visit the nearby “Chachabamba” Inca remains: A well-preserved Inca site next to the river. From this point we begin our ascent following a steep original Inca trail to the beautiful Inca remains of "Wiñay Wayna" (Forever Young). Masterful Inca engineering is today’s highlight along the trail, we will visit these spectacular Inca remains that house a series of Inca baths that also help pressurize water for an efficient irrigation of the numerous agricultural terraces to produce food for the locals and for nearby Machu Picchu. An Inca stone water channel several miles long, brings water from Wiñay Wayna to Machu Picchu. We’ll enjoy a picnic lunch and later continue on the Inca trail until we reach "Inti Punku" or Gate to the sun. At this point, we are suddenly surprised with the first view of the spectacular city of Machu Picchu below us. We take some time to assimilate the view, take photos and catch our breath mesmerized with the magnificence of it all. Later we’ll begin to descent along the wide royal Inca road, we enter the mysterious citadel to enjoy a quick overview of the site and to spend some time wandering and wondering in the midst of its eternal beauty before we exit. We’ll take the bus down to the town of Aguas Calientes and stay at a local hotel. B, Box Lunch. (Dinner is on your own.)
